Week 5 : Finding Mojo & ballistic batteries

Long time no ride on a Saturday, well two weeks absence anyway. Good to get back into the swing of the routine, rolling out the 6k's of empty streets to warm up to the start line. Shorty, Rocket, AvantiTrev, Wobbly Trev, Temple, Cougar, PistolPete and HBK were the only starters, Breakaways Shaz & Aimee disappearing east 5 minutes earlier. A chilled 13 degrees, a light southerly and a weekend ahead painted a perfect prologue, out to the top of Channel Rd with the Breakaways just visible 50 metres ahead. (time for some real tail-lights me thinks) The velocity rule book was ignored with the breeze behind, a small bunch seen eastward in Old Dookie became the bait for Rocket & Pistol to snap at. Over the bridge a pass was made on the tri lads and lasses (on their ritual loop of Dookie, Violet Town and back), greetings hurled at Sootie, Comet, Goose, Greendawg etc who promptly hooked on for a tow to the Emu.  Plenty of Cats heading east as the younger of our lot kept up the pace west back to town. Only a small gathering at the Lemontree to chew over the TDU, superbikes and helicopters.

Not back on two wheels till Tuesday (laid low with gastric dillemas), a light northeaster attracting a good field of Couldabeens (Shorty, HBK, SuperMario, Cougar, Wozza, PistolPete, Kenworth, Jase, AvantiTrev and WobblyTrev, Nick & WhisperingJack back from hols and Rocket the last to arrive)  Each turn out Channel Rd added to the tempo, fairly moving by arrival at Boundary. HBK had manoevred to get Jack's wheel, the pair on for a thrash when their turn came after River Rd. AvantiTrev wisely called to let 'em go, determination saw Jack outgun HBK, but they were left hung out to dry till we were well into Mitchell (suddenly wished to be team players again!) Wozza was well wheeled considering the 110 k he tapped out Monday, SuperMario appeared to be nodding on his efforts though beyond Mitchell's dog-leg.  A good run through Central Kialla and over the highway kept the time sharp, I was quite secondhand from the weekends workout entering Conrod, Rocket & PistolPete as always leading the charge for honours at the finish line.

The hopes of a recovery on Wednesday were high, a dozen players for the Archer-Mitchell-River-Boundary-Channel lap had higher hopes for high speed though. Admittedly, WhisperingJack was kind on the opening shift, unmarked by HBK he made a considerate pace.  There was no aero advantage behind the low AvantiTrev (unless I could get my chin on the headstem) , the turn into Mitchell against an ESE breeze was at least shielded. An almighty pop from the bunch was surely a burst tube, BigMat burbled "burst battery", beserk ballistics beggared belief (beckoning betterment?), big bang bought bikes briskly berthed. Entertainment finished, it was back on the gas for the revised route via River which seems to have found favour, enjoying the change of scenery. Seemed Rocket & Pistol would be taking us all the way to Boundary Rd but an eventual roll over gave everyone the privelige of battling the ESE breeze.  Hurt Lockers formation seems to be popular, two other small packs single file showed imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Supercats rolled west, a brief chance for a yarn with LegalDave, Nick, Shorty, Cougar, FeltMat and AvantiTrev as we basked in easier conditions for Boundary and Channel. WhisperingJacks attack between kinder & school stretched the formation, caught the 5 Breakaways as we slowed for the bypass road, then finished the remainder of Channel below warp drive but still with a 35 average.

New Michelins on (chuffed with 7,200k's from the last pair) and an obligitory chain at 6,000 was a treat for the olde BM,  ran 'em in on a quiet lap Thursday morning with Cougs, both taking a raincheck from pace for a brief seachange. Relentless heat in the evenings and at (non air-conditioned) work has drained a bit of enthusiasm, still shaking the last effects of the weekends lurgi. Half way round a dreaded bindii struck, so a pause to swap tubes to a chorus of screeching galahs as the sun rose in Raftery.

Friday dawned at 21 degrees, a light south / south-southeast begged a Wednesday circuit (always kind on the motivation to finish with a tail wind).  7 Couldabeens had a 10 minute head start, but glad my mojo has almost taken up residence again, not such a chore to head into a head wind on Archer. Very distant tail lights lured pursuit, far enough ahead to keep motivation on the boil. Sosso was the River Rd mouse for a monster Cat pack to chase, 40+ in the peleton would make tail-end Charlie a tenuous rubber band position. 51 as always in fine formation hotly at the Cats heels, a Goat group some distance back,  Doc's quadrella single filed from Boundary into River.  Cougar & I kept on the northbound Boundary Rd tail light chase, P&W's greeted at the bridges, heads down and pace up in Channel to identify these tail light carrots. By the cypress trees we finally reeled in Patty, Shaz & the Breakaways, persistantly persuing a petad peleton proficiently pedalling positively.........poop! pesky proliferation of prose personifies peculiar psychosis! (must take my medication)

Week 4 Windswept and wasabi Wednesday's

Another weekend off the treadley, climatising to this erratic behavior is difficult, each comeback is fraught with the realisation of effort needed.  Monday's temperature was at least cooler than the oven like conditions of last week. Almost a cool 16 degrees to reassociate with the bike on a cautious course 'cause creaking calves can't crank cracking cadence, curtailed courses causes cronic consistency.   Northbound punters were rare on the main drag in the darkness of 5.30, maybe the Crit has many on a taper. Intercepted Cougar firing smooth and strong for a traditional lap of Channel-Boundary & Old Dookie, avoiding yet another pesty pooch to the south of the kinder.  Caught up on the weekend's bike news, crossed paths with a single filed cat pack south of the pub (greeted by an unidentified figure in the darkness) and a pair here and there on the journey to Old Dookie. Suprised to see LegalSteve on the turn with a late P&W pack behind, a handful of Muppets a distance in arrears. Despite the strengthening southerly Cougar kept grinding homeward, a wake up for my lax legs but a good warm up for laps ahead.

By arvo, limbs had loosened, Wozza encouraging a short 30 clicks now that temperature was short of blast furnace proportions. Away at 5, it was up to the Golf course, out to the Emu, the Toaster then back via Old Dookie, the aim not to blow a gasket.  (one should be careful riding with a younger and fitter gasket) A strong SSW propelled us to the Emu but the honeymoon soon ended with a slog to the toaster against the 26km/h of resistance with 30 degrees to warm as well. Just a hint of west to the wind made a chore of the return home, heart rate at 170+ to match Wozza's determination. Quite a workout for a short lap, wouldn't have put that effort into a solo ride, but I guess measuring up to another raises the incentive.  Back into town within the hour, flags flapping,  legs burning and a 760 calorie deficit to rectify.

Another reprive from toasting temperatures on Tuesday morning, 15 degrees even needed a base layer (my how we soften swiftly). Met Wozza in the main drag, climatised to the stiff southerly for the 5k roll to the Couldabeens start. Rocket, SuperMario, AvantiTrev, WobblyTrev, Trav, DiscoSteve and (lo, and behold!) BigMat out of self appointed seclusion (maybe motivated by Ro's great 100k lap yesterday?). The rusty lad needed a reminder to get up the road when his turn came, to at least give some draft for those behind from the 18-26km/h gust.   Duty called for me again in Boundary alongside Trav, lads lacking legs & lungs lent leniency, lest left lonesome & lagging. DiscoSteve did his usual exit, HBK spied northbound half biking two Breakaways (presumed to be some form of assistance?). We had a little giddyup for Mitchell Rd now the wind was at our side, PistolPete arriving and u-turning to join in near the dog-leg. Wozza drove well to Central Kialla, but BigMat's phone did a dishonourable dismount beyond the intersection, lucky nobody used it as a speedbump. (bet there was a bump in the Strava data though). Across the highway without hold up, turns shortened post Roubaix and speed increased with the wind almost now behind us, Wozz & I scoring lead-out duty into Conrod straight. Rocket & Pistol hit warp drive with 400 to go (dragging a happy little SuperMario into the 50's in their wake). Missed my instant response boxed in, but let loose to pursue when the coast was clear to just pinch 3rd, Rocket vs Pistol won on calibre. BigMat paid the price of recent lethargy, humbled by Wobbly Trev passing in the closing metres.

Turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the howling wind of Tuesday arvo, gritted teeth and turned up to the hospital boom gate wondering if there'd be any takers for a ride. Suprised to find a dozen ready to roll with trees bent over from the southerly howling at 35km/h (with gusts to 50). Axel, new dad Dalton, Tony, Craig, Paul, Coggo, Wozza, Luke, Andy, Jamie, Steve the machine and Scott. With more wind than a dozen dim sims, we were shoved up Verney Rd at a good rate of knots, Coggo flew into the roundabout way too hot and went horizontal, a bent deraillier hanger the only injury thankfully. Slowed to a crawl for a minute whilst Coggo gained some composure and the bunch reformed, back into action beyond the rail line to have Bomber & Sticks join in. Mid to high 30's out to the Emu and a lot of speculation on who'd draw the shortest straw into the headwind.  Trent & Trudy latched on as we passed at the ripple strips, my short straw on the front was the leg from Church to Toaster to valve bounce the old engine (grateful Paul was kind matching instead of despatching). Luke, Trent, Steve the machine, Bomber and Sticks drove like demons in Old Dookie & Boundary, I drew another short straw trying to match Sticks beyond the Broken Bridges at 33 clicks while the wind blew faster that us. Nearly half the field vanished in the westward slog of River Rd, a couple just content to hang on the back. Buffeting from the wind and speed variations were amplified to the back of the bunch causing big brake grabs and a few close to rear ending. Hands tightly gripped handlebars, arms and shoulders tensed trying to hold a straight course, furrowed brows facing the wind and highly focussed concentration made it a tough ride. Bomber & Sticks headed for home at Kialla Central, Axel shortcut via Archer leaving just 9 to continue on the usual route, nicely driven by Trent & Luke for a good distance. Seems the idea of a sprint was shelved into the Conrod dipper, but Paul, itching for action (with Dalton atttached) launched a move in the closing 400, Tony opened a door to let me at it, Paul was hung out to dry, but I couldn't match the Dalton Diesel in the last 100 (despite 640 watts at 60km/h), settling for 2nd fiddle.

The wind is as incessant and annoying as the Instyler ad, still blowing from the south in the dark of Wednesday morning, thankfully eased to 15-22km/h. The calmer karma of the Kialla course suited me nicely (legs still wrung out from last night), an effort though to push into 6k's to the start. Found Cougar on the way, and hooked up with FeltMat, Temple, Rocket, Jase, LegalDave, PistolPete and SuperMario at the roundabout. The first leg beside Pistol awoke some of last nights memories, half the wind of yesterday but still a grind for tired legs. LegalDave, fresh from coastal tours was a better match with Pete to the turn, Rocket, Jase and Temple were the motivated movers in Mitchell, undeterred by the side wind. FeltMat had the mainsail hoisted for the tailwind in Boundary (Choppy had his head down southbound, about to rip into River Rd) There was no expense spared in Channel Rd either, aforementioned movers applying tempo with gusto, seems it's hasta la vista to the quiet mid week roll around? (now to be Wasabi Wednesday's?) A thrash beyond the kinder pleased some and stretched others, quick enough for my Garmin to lose satellite connection and shut down.  Roscoe was found meandering solo just after Orrvale Rd, tested his sprintability to latch on for a tow home. A laugh on the tour through town, easily rounded up and passed an asthmatic engined bicycle, tyres almost at 20psi, pilot puffing on a PJ and motor puffing out CO under the strain. The definitive EcoNazi.

Unseasonal use of base layers for January, even armwarmers and 3/4 knicks for some. Still, 13 degrees at 5.30 is far more agreeable than last weeks 30 degree start. Kenworth, Cougar, Temple, BigMat, AvantiTrev, WobblyTrev, Shorty, Rocket, PistolPete and (last as always) HBK formed the crew,  joined by '51's Nev and Ron (most of their bunch desserted to TDU). Kenworth & I opened the Channel Rd account, holidays haven't harmed him, happily hurrying (&huffing) heroically hither. (ponders, perpetual poetic proliferation prompts psychiatric prescription?) Turns were kept smooth and steadily brought to the boil, the odd stone pinged from wheels ricocheted through the bunch. Kept an eye on the last to turn into Boundary, played joining link to the guns on the front accellerating away.  AvantiTrev's turns at the front were just a k or two easier, a chance to get the heart rate below 160. The slightest suggestion of a south east breeze contributed to hot pace in Mitchell, our 51 guests with Rocket & Pistol driving the train westward (a blurred greeting to Blackie on his habitual solo east) HBK peeled off at Archer, the remaining dozen speared on to the highway and beyond. Several opted out of donating services to the front beyond Roubaix, Temple, Shorty, BigMat and even Pistol forming a long tail to Rocket, Nev and Ron now swapping shorter turns at the pointy end. Felt the weight of responsibility playing the stickytape to hold the bunch together as small fractures appeared, damn these guys can drive!  We all swamped solo Fitzy in Conrod, Ron, Nev and Pistol (now with new wings) crossing the line, just 13 seconds shy of the record.

A night off Thursday, forecast rain and lightning arrived on cue in the early hours of Freaky/Faark Friday to cancel any plans , no riders on the storm today Jim Morrison.

Week 3 Put some more ice on the fire

One of those weeks where social and family obligations restrict the k's on the bike and put some into the cobwebbed car. Missed the regular Saturday lap (may need to enrol on a Methadone program?), not even a leg thrown over on Sunday. So, a rusty start to the week on Monday with a short lap in magic temperatures (16) to shake off the corrosion and remember how the cranks rotate. Le femmes de Breeze were presumed to be 2 k ahead in Archer with a red led light display in the distance, but wasn't about to set off on a chase,  a quiet lap was all that was needed. The weeks temperatures of blast furnace proportions had cancelled any ideas on evening rides, only reserved for mad dogs and Englishmen (and local 'WorldChampions' it seems)

Tuesday's Couldabeens roll call included Temple, Trav, DiscoSteve, Kenworth, Rocket, Jase, AvantiTrev, FujiTrev, Chris A, Wozza, Brent (long time absent part time recruit) and last, of course, HBK.
A 20 degree moderate start by AvantiTrev for leg 1 and considerate leg 2 for a recovering DiscoSteve made way for an increased tempo for the rest of Channel Rd as the muscle was applied into the ENE breeze. Arriving at Boundary found the breeze now favourable from the NE, amplifying the speed. HBK and Brent were locked into a head to head battle to the Broken bridges but tempo was moderated to survivable when AvantiTrev called for calm. Pistol Pete had arrived from the south (missing the start) as DiscoSteve departed to his driveway.  Content staying at the rear was FujiTrev, who is now an AvantiTrev having bought a new Avanti from AvantiTrev (who's sometimes RidleyTrev) but usually AvantiTrev 'cause the Ridley's disAdvantaged by Avanti's. But the new Avanti of AvantiTrev (who used to be FujiTrev) has no Advantage over the Fuji steering (but fits AvantiTrev better) so FujiTrev who's now AvantiTrev will be called WobblyTrev so we don't disAdvantage AvantiTrev who's rarely RidleyTrev.  Get it?
A few skipped turns in Mitchell to join WobblyTrev in tail-light position as speed got serious with Team Tempo (Rocket, Jase, ChrisA, Kenworth and the Pistol) driving west. My turn beside Pistol at 183 bpm was a little shorter than normal to prevent cardiac arrest, flying up Mt.Nicolaci in the 40's taxed the tenacity too. A halt at the highway to take oxygen on board while traffic passed was welcomed, but all too brief. Relinquished my turns entering Conrod straight fighting a losing battle with a stitch, Wozza put in a fine maiden journey for the Tuesday/Thursday lap, but it was Rocket and Jase stretching their lead taking the 1-2 in that order. 14 seconds shaved off our best lap was pleasing,  considering the few earlier quieter turns and some traffic delays.

Skipped Wednesday, Thursday was the next outing, habitually with the Couldabeens. About time to turn off one of those women and put some more ice on the fire, already 30 degrees for the roll to the start at 5.30am. Queensland & holidays has poached a few regulars (Kenworth, WhisperingJack and Nick) but FeltMat, Cougar, Rocket, AvantiTrev, WobblyTrev, Trav, Temple, PistolPete and Jase fronted for duty at the carpark.
A little northeasterly to push against in Channel Rd but FeltMat had a sensible starting pace, the contrast was Rocket setting the supersonic speed standard beyond. Nearing Channel Rd's end WobblyTrev had a trajectory twitch, tenuously tight to Temple's tyre to terrify, time to try tactful talk?   A sudden halt for a car in Boundary was called, parklights as useful as candles in the dark. A thoughtful build up of speed for the southern leg kept a united bunch, my Garmin showing 208 bpm didn't add up though (unattached monitor).  Fowl were swapped for ducks at the last bridge to be todays chicane, the trek west kept fast and very smooth with an orchestra of carbon wheels playing the symphony of speed. Not a lot of chat going on, enjoying the 56/11 combo though, good to see AvantiTrev having a dip at front of house .  FeltMat poured on the motivation up Mt Nicolaci and a clean run across the highway kept legs busy, Rocket, Jase, Trav and PistolPete were the usual star performers as most lost a bit of sparkle in Conrod straight .  The smaller field was just 1:36 off the fastest time (Tuesday), but each ride turning to a race is tiresome.

A change of course for Friday, a tour de Archer-Mitchell-River-Boundary-Channel with Cougar, both of us keen to avoid HBK's "slow and steady in view of the hot weather" ride (a spy on Strava showed their "slow" 36km/h average). Set off a little earlier (hoping not to become 'carrots' for HBK, PistolPete et al) enjoying a cool 23 degree start. The east-northeast breeze became obvious in Mitchell, meant a tail wind for the homeward leg in Channel, so all was well.  The short north up Central Kialla then east up River Rd put up a different scenery, seemed longer with a headwind though, certainly easier headed north in Boundary Rd. Hurt Lockers' thin line of 5 were the lure for a supersized SuperCat pack in pursuit half a k behind, dragging quite a draft of wind with them. The 3 in P&W Part1 were at the bridges, we'd turned into Channel with no sign of others southbound, our reward of a tailwind home (and a little cooling from orchard irrigation) a fitting end to a short but hot week.

Week 2: What light from yonder Archer breaks?

Caught underdressed for a cool Saturday ride, a wardrobe miscalculation at 11 degrees, (doesn't quite rank as summer) could have included a base layer and arm warmers. Came across Jase on the roll down the main drag, a Faark Friday post mortem discussed on the way, collecting Cougar in Archer Rd.  Nick, FujiTrev, Avanti(a new one)Trev, Dion, Temple, HBK and PistolPete lined up in the carpark for the 6am off, FeltMat arriving in the first 100 metres. A waskally wabbit bolted from Prentice Rd across our bough, missing by millimetres, then to add to the creature features, Darth Vader charged at the ankles toward Channel Rd's end. Quite the trippy view of AvantiTrev and Temples' flouro socks in unsyncronised cadence, FujiTrev taking tiny turns, Dion doing it easy and a few minor misdemeanors on speed limits by some (not mentioning HBK) on pace in Boundary Rd. Out front with Dion for Old Dookie then Jase for the leg to the church burned up breakfast, happy to let others face the music of the WSW home. Doc's strobing headlight unmistakable a k away, PistolPete and HBK were in for the long haul homeward, a packed Cat pack near Boundary Rd of 30+ on "a quiet roll over" (see also HBK's "quiet ride"). I reckon Ford Rd's reseal has had a smoother topping, harshness last week has made way for a smooth stretch. A distant solitary rider was gradually caught, Weapon (with 60 already clocked) on the pinkle projectile recently fitted and newly perched, Zipps howling on the coarse section.  Dion headed for home at Verney as the pack continued west, on the limit for Wanganui, Rudd and the Boulevard (coffee going cold or did I miss the special sprint stage in town?) AvantiTrev, FeltMat and Temple on a mission of movement to the Lemontree.  Blogs, Irongirls, BikeParty stunts and nicknames the subjects served up as Goats, Muppets and Gazelles set forth from Friars.

Time was against me Sunday morning so a short early lap satisfied the urge. On the familiar trail of Archer, Mitchell, Boundary and Channel Rd with Cougar and keen for a steady lap at an aerobic pace, I'd at least got the wardrobe right against the 8 degrees. No bikes about at 6.30 but a perfectly still morning begged a lap. Kept a smooth cap on h.r.(132-139), speed (30-33) and cadence (68), a nice change from the normal bumpy Garmin graphs. Rabbits were out in force darting about in Channel Rd but able to thread a path back home. A good sense of achievement to chalk up some steady k's without the excess exertion, a chance to enjoy a ride for it's pleasure rather than pain.

Pondered the strengthening Monday arvo wind, but Wozza was keen to loosen the legs, so chose an east then west course rather than face the southerly blast, more wind than a kilo of sourkraut at 5.30. Out of town on Old Dookie Rd fighting the wind gusts (37 to 52km/h) shoving at the wheels, Travis and Liam on an inbound course meant we weren't the only 'dedicated' (crazy?) ones. Left at the Toaster and right at the Church, we journeyed to Quarry Rd for a bit of variety from the usual circuits. The long leg back home in Lemnos-Cosgrove had challenge written all over it, the small swing to a SSW made it a big grind. Swapping turns didn't have a lot of advantages, but worth a try to gain something.  Difficult to focus on a relaxed sit on the bike while handlebar wrestling, honed thoughts to gaining any shelter from trees, fences and buildings instead. The 20k west home finally ended at Rudd Rd, but a k worth of 40km/h headwind wasn't a fitting end (the cemetery was almost appropriate) Relief to be sheltered on the Boulevard to home, minus 934 calories. Again, similar heartrates with just 6rpm cadence difference.

Monday's southerly weakened a fraction overnight but was still a battle at 5.30. An internal voice called HTFU so set forth (with some effort) on the 6k trip to the Couldabeens start. FujiTrev, AvantiTrev, Kenworth, PistolPete, Rocket, Nick, DiscoSteve and Chris A set forth in Channel, two Trev's leading the way, the Fuji on it's swansong, a new Avanti about to replace it (and hopefully steering far better?)  A right into Boundary to brave the elements of the 30km/h headwind tested the two Trevs, tactfully tagalongs today. My grand plans of a decent turn at the front with PistolPete evaporated with just a km completed, optomism flattened by reality. DiscoSteve peeled off to his driveway, Nick set up camp in the rear stalls half way down Mitchell while the formidable teaming of Rocket, Chris A and PistolPete were a fast act to follow. FujiTrev had disappeared when we reached the highway, only 5 rotating meant little rest for the weary. Gradually reaping the benefit of a tailwind by Conrod (and a great tow from Chris & Rocket) things were cooking with half a k to go, but the Pistol had a ballistic bolt off the front in the low 50's. A gap opened, Rocket kindly allowed me in behind Pete to hang on for a 300m tow, but on cue with 100 left, Rocket lit up the Cosmic's to fly to the front (his anti-biotics must be nitro methane), I stayed put (unable to add to 658 watts) allowing Pete a well deserved 2nd.   Tuesday arvo's continuing strong wind blew away any enthusiasm for a Hospital bunch stress test, the couch beckoned.

The solstice passed just 16 days ago, already the darkness seems to be lengthening, the sun slow to get out of bed (but puts on a good show when it does though). Wednesdays Couldabeens attendance bettered Tuesday (no doubt improved weather played a part) with Rocket, Cougar, AvantiTrev, Shorty, Jase, FeltMat, HBK and Nick rolling off at 6, PistolPete joining just a k down the road. The base layer has re-emerged from the winter drawer to fend against cooler mornings, arm warmers too getting more use. Surely, not the end of warm mornings yet? 8 degrees out Mitchell Rd didn't affect AvantiTrev and HBK with arms bared. Copious sledges on the Pistol mullet from Kenworths' shame file, maybe more hair history is to follow? Skippy was on a similar course to us at the top of Mitchell but changed tack with our chat. FeltMat's complaints of cooked thighs didn't seem to dim his pace, a good roll to Channel Rd as we crossed paths with Nev. We'd steamed well westward (kept Nev at a distance till the kinder) for a collective finish back to town with time to spare.

Summer returned with 17 degrees Thursday morning (following my grizzles yesterday?) and the ranks grew with favourable winds (E-ENE) for the Couldabeens lap  of Channel, Boundary, Mitchell and Raftery.  Nick, Temple, AvantiTrev, Cougar, Trav, Jase, FeltMat, Chris A, Pistol, Kenworth, Rocket and Whispering Jack  (back on comeback #276). The bell tolled at five to.........but soft! What light from yonder Archer breaks? It is the north and HWK is the sun! Arise fair sun.....but not 2 minutes late! Consideration was cast aside to make him work for his tardiness, I coupled with the formidable Chris A to drive out Channel, the gentleman of course refraining from tearing my legs apart. Team tempo followed on the roll-overs, Rocket, Kenworth and PistolPete taking the next turns till sympathy struck to slow for HBK, Rocket dropping back at the kinder to retrive him. A welcomed ease of pace till the S bend when Rocket and the snoozer latched back on, with a duck crossing thrown in to steer around.  Flat chat Jack back on pack attack in Boundary, though his turn was brief. Five fowl fouled the pace nearing Mitchell (again!) but it was back on the gas headed west, matching Rocket in "masochistic Mitchell" in the mid 40's needed the chin on the headstem and clenching handlebars with teeth. The A league drove on, over the highway and up to Arcadia Downs, Jack went full bore again at the front in Conrod but burnt up on re-entry, Chris A taking the chocolates and all re-writing the record books for the fastest lap to date (45:23)

Usual protocols have returned to Thursday nights, start with a small bunch and watch it grow. 8 set off from the Library at 6 (Wozza, Paul, Craig, Clive, Tony, Coggo and Jamie) doubling the ranks as we go. A conservative slog in the low 30's against a stiff NNE breeze, LegalSteve and Dion joined in at DECA, Andy in Ford Rd, the Machine and Simmo out near the Emu, Sticks at the railway line, Axel in Old Dookie and Sprinter at Channel Rd., many wheels make light work. Momentum built from the Emu onward, cooking by River Rd in the low 40's with the northeaster blowing at 17km/h. Tony's planning an epic Tourdefightbacc #2, Sprinter running in the stealth Avanti, Andy's been off the bike and in the gym, Jamie's jovial jabber, all proof that tailwind allows conversation. The Machine, Sticks, Paul and others of big calibre drove the train well in Central Kialla and Mitchell, serious speed after crossing the highway sent most (including me) into indian file behind the usual drivers, Sticks and the Machine stepped aside at Conrod's start for others to blow off the cobwebs. One by one the contenders emptied tanks and found neutral (some were hung out to dry), Sprinter launched with 200 left, the Machine teasing his effort to the line. I'd held on for 4th with luck, the bunch had split into two, so rolled in with the rear guard sharing post mortems.

Fridays effort was a quiet one with Gumby gastroch's and tired touche. Nice and steady out Channel Rd in fine conditions, up to Boundary to view Freaky Fridays always entertaining show. Vince & the Rabbit were laying bait for the 30+ Supercats, the flying squad 51 in hot pursuit.  P&W Part 1 approached the pub, Part 2 a kilometre behind.  We'd arrived at Old Dookie to find a menagerie of Muppets & Goats occupying most of the road, halted for traffic. A good trek home with a feint northeaster, a recent Strava crown and a BigMat scalp motivating Cougars' pace, I just tried to keep up. The forthcoming weekend off the bike may be well timed.

Week 1: A turkey and pudding legacy

Lit by a Lampre sunrise Saturday, a pink and blue sky to turn the cranks toward the customary weekend starter. Just 10 to commence the usual circuit, others possibly bogged down by Christmas consumption?  Nick, Rocket, Jase, Cougar, Avanti & FujiTrev, HBK, Temple and PistolPete lined up in the carpark (Whispering Jack on another retirement?) and set forth at 6 on a gradual warm up, simmered nicely to match Rocket for leg 2. Just a hint of an ESE breeze didn't bother, no sprint stages with Jack away and Trev's limit to respect. Fitzy spotted southbound on Boundary, Rocket got the circulation active (and the Garmin graph rising) attempting to match his 3k turn at the front, I was pleased to see the Toaster come into view just before I was toast. Squeaky pads from Temple & Jase at the church, plenty of caution peering for traffic through tall grass. Ace temperature at this hour with sun rising, left at the Emu and homeward bound, a long line of felines (24+) cranking toward the Emu on their normal trajectory. A punctured Shaz (with Zan) in Ford Rd sternly called a roadside assist from HBK, the bunch obliging a pit stop (for AvantiTrev to repair?) Back in motion after a few minutes the Breakaways latched on for a quick tow for Fords' remainder, Wanagnui and Rudd (but a second flat in the Boulevard ruined their run) Holiday plans, sledging Jack and glutony was the table talk, Weapon dropped by for Christmas greetings and a mass of Muppets made movement west.

The Monday Fb ride suggestion was for 5.55 on a course undisclosed, a proposal for an anti-clockwise Toaster circuit favoured the SSW'er to get an unanimous vote from Wozza, FeltMat, Supermario, HBK, Rocket, PistolPete and Jase. 8 degrees was less than inspiring, the wind at 15km/h made Conrod straight the chore, penalty paid for my Christmas indulgence, felt like I was carrying top weight (Rocket respectful only lightly toasting my legs at 35 and not burning them to a crisp). Relief for a moment at the horse stud kink to be out of a head wind, but PistolPete's turn pumped the speed up.    An easier task tackling Mitchell eastbound and leaving other to assume the position at the front, noticed Doc plying west. A steady tap all the way to Boundary and with wind more behind us than ever it was great pace to the Pub, FeltMat putting in a big turn. To Toaster then Emu without wasting much time it was head down and grit teeth for the westward return to town. HBK added fuel to the fire of Rocket and PistolPete, SuperMario calling a short turn into the elements.  By Ford Rd we'd come across Doc again (and westward again), the call to jump on was turned down for his turn for home. It was hard yakka into the SW till relief came at Rudd Rd turning toward town, anticipation of a relaxed coffee and late breakfast drove the wheels and cranks. A bruschetta and babble on trailers, caravans and the next WhisperingJack comeback topped off a solid 60k for 8.

Awake early Tuesday with unrested thoughts needed a decent lap as therapy, it was mount up time at 5.40 to top off 2013 and round off the k's for the year. Aimed at Ford and Lemnos Cosgrove Rd as an alternative but soon realised I was on 51 hallowed ground as lights bore down behind nearing Lemnos. Kept well right as their train steamed by, a g'day or two and a Newto offer to climb aboard (appreciated but turned down due to my ancient and out classed engine) As the No 51 whistled off into the sunrise I took the right into Boundary on a mission to Channel Rd. Eyes peeled at Old Dookie for Supercats right and 51 left (signs of both some distance away) it was forward ho to the Pub then a right into Channel and out of the light SW that hampered in Boundary Rd.  Through the S bends (don't you hate hitting a stone half way into a corner that kicks a wheel sideways), onto the cypress trees, a right then left, up to the Kinder then down to the school, cross the bypass (upright) then back into town to chalk up 30. Slowly round a big block then on to Archer picking up Cougar to tap out a further 25k, half into a headwind but with a therapeutic tailwind home. Effort was rewarded with Degani's caffine and a great yarn, odometer stopping at 18,028km for 2013.

New years day spent off the bike (blame directed at a 2010 Cab Sav) but the craving returned on Thursday. A thin turn out of Couldabeens, PistolPete, Jase, Rocket, Cougar, AvantiTrev and FujiTrev the only ones not on holiday and/or tough enough to have a dip. A rather mild 18 degrees, the smell of last night's rain, and a slowly building SSW to make us burn off turkey and pudding. All was well heading out Channel Rd till FujiTrev caused a moment almost slicing off half of Rocket's front wheel, then duck and ducklings ambled into our path at the S bend to test reactions. The hard yards were done in Boundary against the 20km/h wind (FujiTrev quickly abandoning plans at the front for rearmost retirement). I dug into the determination depths in Mitchell Rd beside Pistol to go the extra mile (well, 2.3km anyway) heart rate peaking at 180. Just 4 rotating now but preserving a tight knit team, back for another stint with Pete to Archer Rd (2.1k)  before Rocket and Jase allowed me a brief breather. Some hesitation nearing Arcadia Downs by Rocket let Pete and Jase take the lead for Conrod, a fine 3rd place by Cougar finished a good lap, content I'd removed a little of the festive flab.

Numbers down at the library on Thursday evening (culled by Christmas cheer?) but a quality collection of Coggo, Jamie, Wozza, Harpo, Clive and Tony departed at 6. A perfect 25 degrees with a light SSE breeze helped the tour to the Emu, LegalSteve was found loitering with intent near the kennels, MachineSteve continued his westbound path however, nursing injuries. Clive's on new (Christmas?) carbons, Jamie's present a new son and Wozz on his first Library bunch, but all faced the breeze heading to the toaster (minus the usual heavy artillery). Axel attached as we neared the pig farm, each contributing a turn toward River Rd (a treat without the usual south wester), Coggo skipping a turn till re-appearing in Central Kialla Rd. A steady run for most of the lap in the mid to high 30's kept things smooth. The natives became restless as Arcadia Downs drew closer, gradually building tempo into the 40's. My shift at the front came early with 400m of Conrod left, so it was all eggs into one basket or be swamped with 100 left. Mr.Garmin showed a 194bpm redline I tried to ignore, a glance under the armpit showed a big slab of tarmac  before the next contender (LegalSteve) so eased the throttle to prevent a bent valve, twas yonks since the last Library bunch podium (lack of big guns helps)

Word of a quiet lap from HBK and Rocket sounded alarm bells Friday morning (as believable as "I did not have sexual relations with that woman") so took the safe option of a steady circuit with Cougar. Wozza, HBK and Rocket were in Archer Rd as we turned in Channel, seems BigMat, PistolPete, Temple, AvantiTrev and Jase joined up on the Wednesday circuit to rekindle Faark Friday. Cougs and I toured east to Boundary smooth and steady for the FreakyFriday feature. Rabbit was the carrot for Supercats (Matho's flouro green unmistakeable), a two pronged 51 pursuit close behind. Just two P&W's, Shirms and buddy soon after with one or two scattered here and there for Boundary's remainder. A large Goat gathering (Muppets and Gazelles aboard too?) had nearly topped off Old Dookie as Cougar ramped up the return to town.  A good finish to a somewhat erratic week of holidays and indulgence.
